Hi Peter,

Im looking to create a website where people can create a league etc without the need to host themselves. The site will be free to use.

Im looking to re-use a script as a framework, only building on it and adding enhancements. Could I do this with your script? If it is possible, can I need to offer a link back or a donation etc?

many thanks,

Jenno.

Sounds interesting! Thanks for asking. Yes, you could use modify and add to the script. Please keep me updated on this.

What I would appreciate is:

  • Your code modifications must remain open source. It doesn’t have to be made widely available as a download link, but you should be able to provide the code to people who ask.
  • A “based on” credit with a link back. This does not have to appear on all of the implementation pages, but should be made clear on your main site
  • If you ever choose to sell your modifications, the purchaser must know that it was based on my script.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the reply.

I’ll be looking at a few league scripts to choose which will be best as a framework. I’ll let you know if i re-use your script and of cause I’ll follow your comments on open source and link back etc.

Thanks again.

Hi Peter,

I have re-used parts of your script for my new site, mainly the admin areas. Hope this is still ok? I have made a link back to your site from the main admin area when the users have selected to use the type of league that your script is based on. The site will have many different types of leagues, so other areas of the site are not based on your script. Please let me know if you want this link back changing or placing somewhere else? Maybe a section within our forums etc?

I plan to send you any amendments I make to the script what will benefit it. For example, I saw the post from Nicola about adding bonus points. I think this is a nice feature, so I'll code it and send you the changes.

The site is still "beta" ish, so they may be a few bugs etc. Let me know what you think?

Many thanks again for letting me use your script as a template for managing leagues!

The new site is Free Online League.

Cheers,

Jenno.

Thanks for letting me know. I like how you've set that up with the extra information features. This should be handy for those who don't want to host and install their own site and really quick for people to set up. I'd be curious to see how this evolves :D

The way you have the credit now is sufficient.

A few suggestions so far:

- make it optional for leagues to be in the directory
- develop some in-context help
- correct the typo of "individual" on your "about" page

What's your plan for funding the site? Value-added account features, or ads, or both?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your comments. Ill take them into account :-)

With the question on funding... I intend for the site to be aways be free. I may introduce some goodle ads or maybe banners, but not at the moment.

I'll keep in touch with any code changes I make.

Thanks again,

Jenno

Hi peter,

I too have made some heavy modifications to pages and the database, but the “spirit” of your baby is still there. I’m using it to track the stats of a few friends of mine that play an nfl console game for the PS3. As I’m more of a tinker than a coder, hopefully I didn’t break anything; So far so good :-). I made sure to include the “Powered by Peter’s Sports League Standings Version 1.3? in the footer (linking back to your site), so I hope that’s acceptable to you. It’s still a work in progress, with a lot more left to do, but hopefully I’ll have it 100% finished by the summer.

Edit: almost forgot, link: http://madden.icgsports.org

Hi chupacabra,

Sounds good! And the website has some nice added functionalities, like the game summary and all those extra team stats.
