I have setup a page at domain.com/private-area/tommy/ and enabled your redirect pluging to send subscribers to domain.com/private-area/[variable]username[/variable]/

Yet when my test user, Tommy, logs in with username=tommy, he just comes to the Dashboard. Tommy is a Subscriber.

Any ideas about what's not working??

I have no idea, unfortunately. Do other redirects work? There might be a conflicting plugin.
